TAGS opened in August 2014 and offers a dynamic, unique learning experience inspired by an inclusive and holistic view on the development of the whole person.
Traditional subjects will be offered including – Maths, English, languages, music, art, drama – and thematic units, which will provide a rich, integrated study of science, geography, history, social studies and philosophy.
A flexible exam program will give students the opportunity to take exams at a time that suits their individual learning progression. This will allow time to explore interests and to take exams earlier if ability level allows, or to to defer exams until the student is ready. This arrangement will ensure a learning plan which is tailored to the specific needs of each student.
The thematic and experiential approach will nurture and develop enquiring minds. The curriculum will exhibit an open-ended nature but supply the necessary scaffolding to provide appropriate support. Students will work in collaboration with each other and teachers to solve a wide range of challenges from mathematical calculations to problems involving world trade. This allows the teacher to be the facilitator of learning as opposed to the driver.
An atmosphere of relaxed alertness will be encouraged, fostering an environment of high challenge and low stress. Activities will be tailored to individual ability and students will be part of a discussion to incorporate the ‘Achievement and Assessment Agreement’ into their Personal Learning Plan.
This educational process will look to provide young adults with an understanding and respect for the world, a development of self-awareness and community, and a responsibility to take this knowledge and experience forward into their future.
